The short answer
A sewer hose is a low-glamour, high-consequence purchase. The failure mode is unpleasant and happens in public, and the difference between a kit that lasts one season and one that lasts five is a surprisingly small amount of money.
Length: 20 ft, and here is why
Sites vary enormously. The sewer connection can be alongside the trailer, or fifteen feet behind it, or on the wrong side entirely. Ten feet will reach on perhaps two thirds of sites, which is not a useful proportion when the consequence of being short is not being able to dump.
Twenty feet, supplied as two 10 ft sections with rotating fittings, is the right buy. You take one section when the connection is close and both when it is not, which also means less hose to rinse and store.
The common mistake
Wall construction: what you are actually paying for
Almost all RV sewer hoses are accordion-pleated vinyl over a helical wire, and the differences are in how thick the vinyl is and what the wire is made of.
Thin vinyl (entry level). Kinks easily, crushes if you stand on it, and splits along a fold line after a season of being compressed into a bumper tube. The typical owner report is one season.
Reinforced vinyl (mid range). Holds its shape when you pull it across gravel, resists crushing, and survives being compressed repeatedly. This is where the RhinoFLEX sits and it is enough for most people.
Heavy reinforced or polyolefin (premium). Noticeably tougher. The RhinoEXTREME and the Thetford Titan both sit here, and the consistent owner report is that one of these outlasts two mid-range hoses — so the economics work out if you camp regularly.
Smooth bore (a different approach). The Waste Master is not pleated at all. A smooth interior does not trap residue in the accordion ridges, which is its whole argument, and it rinses genuinely clean. It is also the most expensive option here and is built around a permanent trailer-side fitting, so it is a commitment rather than a purchase.
Fittings: the part that determines whether it works at all
Every sewer hose needs three things at the ends, and a kit that includes them is worth noticeably more than a bare hose.
- A bayonet fitting at the trailer end, matching the lugs on your trailer’s waste outlet.
- A 90-degree elbow at the sewer end, so the hose enters the ground connection pointing down.
- A stepped 4-in-1 adapter on the elbow, which is what makes your hose fit whatever diameter a given dump station has.
Swivel or rotating fittings are worth having: without them, the hose twists as you position it and you end up fighting the hose into alignment instead of rotating a fitting.
The fittings explained properly is worth ten minutes before your first trip.
The hose is only half the system
A sewer hose needs a continuous downhill run from the trailer to the connection. Without support it sags, the sag holds waste, and the smell people blame on the hose is the sag.
This is not optional equipment and it is not an upsell — a hose support is part of the purchase. Budget for one when you buy the hose.
The hygiene rules, briefly
Three rules that are not negotiable and are easy to follow:
- A hose that has been near the sewer connection is a sewer hose forever. Never use it for fresh water, never store it with the fresh water hose, and ideally keep them in different compartments.
- Gloves. Thin exam gloves tear on a bayonet fitting; 6-mil nitrile does not. A box lasts years.
- Never connect a drinking-water hose to a tank rinser. Keep a separate, clearly different-colored hose for that job.
The verdict
RhinoFLEX 20 ft for most people: complete, standard, cheap, good enough. RhinoEXTREME or Thetford Titan if you camp most weekends and would rather buy once. Valterra Viper if you want the clear elbow, which is genuinely useful for judging when a tank has finished emptying. Waste Master if the accordion ridges bother you enough to spend the money and commit to a trailer-side fitting.
What to remember
- Buy 20 ft as two 10 ft sections with rotating fittings.
- Wall thickness is what you are paying for, and the premium hoses genuinely outlast two cheap ones.
- A stepped 4-in-1 adapter is what makes a hose fit a strange dump connection. Carry a spare.
- The hose needs a support to give it a continuous downhill run. Budget for one.
- A sewer hose is never a fresh-water hose, ever.

Common questions
Twenty feet, as two 10 ft sections. Ten feet reaches on many sites but not all, and two sections let you deploy only what you need.
A thin entry-level hose commonly lasts a season of regular use. A reinforced mid-range hose lasts several. The premium hoses are reported to outlast two mid-range ones.
Almost always residue trapped in a sag. Add a support so the run is continuously downhill, and rinse through after every dump. The setup sequence.
No. The trailer outlet is a bayonet fitting at a diameter no garden hose matches, and the flow volume is far higher than a garden hose carries.
