The Best RV Sewer Hose That Fits In The Bumper
Most travel trailer bumpers are a 4 in square tube with caps, and the only hoses that fit are helix kits sold as two short sections. Knowing that eliminates half the shelf before you start.

The short answer
Measure your bumper before you buy anything. A typical travel trailer rear bumper is a 4 in square steel tube with removable plastic caps, and the usable internal length is whatever sits between the frame brackets — commonly around 40 in, but genuinely variable by manufacturer and model. That measurement, not the hose’s advertised length, is the specification that decides this.
Helix hose: the standard RV sewer hose construction: a plastic spiral with a flexible wall between the turns, which compresses accordion-style for storage. It is why a 10 ft hose stores at around 3 ft and a smooth-bore hose does not compress at all.
What fits, and what will not
| Kit | Sold as | Compresses | Bumper-friendly |
|---|---|---|---|
| Camco RhinoFLEX 20 ft | Two 10 ft hoses | Accordion helix, well | Yes |
| Valterra Viper 20 ft | Two 10 ft hoses | Accordion helix, well | Yes |
| Camco RhinoEXTREME 20 ft | Pre-assembled, heavier wall | Less than RhinoFLEX | Usually, tighter |
| Thetford Titan 20 ft | Metal-reinforced polyolefin | Less compressible | Often not |
| Lippert Waste Master 20 ft | Smooth bore, permanent fitting | Does not compress | No |
| Valterra Slunky support | 20 ft coiled support | To about 2 ft | Yes |
Two rows deserve a note. The Waste Master is an excellent system and it is the wrong purchase if bumper storage is your constraint — it is a smooth-bore hose with a permanent trailer-side fitting, and it does not compress. RhinoFLEX vs Waste Master is the full comparison if you are willing to store it elsewhere. The Thetford Titan is the toughest-feeling hose in the mainstream price range and that toughness is exactly what makes it less willing to squash into a 40 in tube.
What to look for
Two short sections, not one long one. This is the whole trick. Two 10 ft hoses with their own fittings give you two compact bundles you can slide in from each end, and they let you use only 10 ft at a short-reach site. One continuous 20 ft hose is a single long bundle that a bumper will not take.
Wall thickness, honestly weighed. A thicker wall resists crush damage better and compresses less. Those are the same property viewed two ways, and you cannot have both. If your storage is the bumper, a standard-wall hose stored carefully beats a thick-wall hose jammed in.
End fittings that do not snag going in. Pre-attached swivel bayonets are convenient in use and they are the widest part of the bundle. Measure the fitting diameter against your bumper opening, not just the hose.
Caps that actually seal the bumper. If your bumper caps are missing or split, replace them before you store a hose in there. A bumper tube is also a water trap, and a hose stored in a wet tube is a hose that smells.
The common mistake
The picks
Camco RhinoFLEX 20 ft. The default, and the right default here. Two 10 ft hoses, swivel bayonet ends, a 4-in-1 clear adapter and caps in the box, and the largest parts ecosystem in the category if you break a fitting away from home. Store the two sections separately and it is the easiest kit in this list to get into a bumper.
Valterra Viper 20 ft. Same two-section construction with rotating collars at both ends and a clear 90-degree adapter, which makes hooking up at an awkward dump inlet genuinely easier. Slightly thinner on the shelf for spare parts. The Camco vs Valterra comparison is the brand decision in full.
Camco RhinoEXTREME 20 ft. The thicker-walled version, pre-assembled with swivel fittings both ends. It is the honest recommendation for anyone camping a full season — and it compresses less, so if your bumper measures short, check before you commit. Buy this one if your storage is a dedicated tube or an underbelly compartment instead.
Valterra Slunky 20 ft support. Not a hose, and listed deliberately, because a sewer hose without a continuous downhill run does not drain properly no matter which kit you bought. The Slunky is a coiled spring support that compresses to about 2 ft, which is the only kind of 20 ft support that shares a bumper with a hose. The rigid telescoping alternatives go on a roof or in a pass-through. The support roundup ranks both types.
What to remember
- Measure the usable length inside your bumper tube before buying anything.
- Kits sold as two 10 ft hoses fit; single 20 ft lengths and smooth-bore hoses do not.
- Thicker walls resist crushing and compress less - you cannot have both.
- RhinoFLEX is the easiest 20 ft kit to get into a bumper.
- Rinse, drain and cap before storing, and slide it in loosely rather than forcing it.
- The Slunky is the support that fits in a bumper; rigid supports do not.
How we picked
We have not stored each of these in a bumper tube. This ranking reads each maker’s published construction, section lengths, fittings and kit contents, plus current retailer listing data read automatically, against the rubric on how we pick, with storage weighted hardest for this page. Bumper dimensions vary by trailer manufacturer and model, so the fit column is a guide based on construction rather than a guarantee — measure yours.

Common questions
Commonly around 40 in of usable length in a 4 in square tube, but it varies by manufacturer. Measure yours.
Yes if it is two 10 ft sections. No if it is one continuous length, metal-reinforced, or smooth-bore.
Fine if the hose is rinsed, drained, capped and slid in loosely. Wet storage smells and a forced crease is where the hose later splits.
Only a coiled one like the Slunky, which collapses to about 2 ft. Rigid telescoping supports need a pass-through or a rack.
