30 Amp vs 50 Amp RV Service

Not a bigger version of the same thing. Fifty amp is a genuinely different supply, and the difference is more than the number suggests.

Progressive Industries EMS-PT30X Electrical Management System, 30 Amp

A full electrical management system, not just a surge protector: it reads the pedestal and disconnects on low or high voltage, which is the fault that actually kills air conditioners.

The 50-amp version of the same system. A 50-amp service is two 120 V legs, and this watches both — which a 30-amp unit on an adapter cannot do.

Lets a 30-amp cord plug into a household outlet for loading up in the driveway. One air conditioner will trip the breaker; the fridge and the lights will not.

The short answer

30 amp is a single 120 V circuit — about 3,600 watts, three prongs on the plug. 50 amp is two separate 120 V legs of 50 amps each — about 12,000 watts, four prongs. So 50 amp gives you roughly three times the power, not 67% more.

Look at the plug on the end of your shore power cord. Three prongs, one angled, is 30 amp. Four prongs is 50 amp. That one observation determines which protector you buy, which adapters you need, and what you can run at the same time.

What each service provides. The watts column is why 50 amp is not incrementally better.

Thirty amps at 120 V is 3,600 watts. Fifty amps on each of two legs is 50 × 120 × 2, which is 12,000 watts. That is why a 50 amp trailer runs two air conditioners and a residential refrigerator and a microwave, and a 30 amp trailer runs one air conditioner and then starts making choices.

NEMA TT-30: the three-prong 30 amp RV plug configuration. It looks superficially like a 240 V dryer plug and is not one — TT-30 is 120 V. Confusing the two is a real and expensive mistake.

What you can actually run on 30 amp

The useful way to think about 30 amp is a budget of roughly 30 amps, and the air conditioner takes a big slice of it.

Air conditioner (13,500 BTU), running12-16

Coffee maker8-10
Hair dryer10-12

Rough current draw for common appliances at 120 V. Startup current on motors is briefly much higher.

Add up the top three rows and you are over 30. That is the whole 30 amp experience: air conditioning or the microwave or the water heater on electric, not all at once. Learning which combinations trip the breaker is part of the first season.

Also note the startup surge. An air conditioner compressor draws briefly much more than its running current when it kicks in, which is why the breaker sometimes trips the moment the A/C cycles on while the microwave is going.

Adapting between them

30 amp trailer, 50 amp pedestal. A 50 A male to 30 A female dogbone. You get 30 amps, which is all your trailer can use anyway. Completely fine.

50 amp trailer, 30 amp pedestal. A 30 A male to 50 A female dogbone. You get 30 amps fed to one leg, so half the breaker panel. One air conditioner on a mild day and careful management; it works, with limits.

Either trailer, household outlet. A 15 amp adapter. Fridge, lights, charging the battery — useful for loading up at home. Air conditioning will trip the house breaker. All the adapters, explained.

The common mistake

Thinking a 30-to-50 adapter upgrades your service. It changes the plug shape and nothing else. A 50 amp trailer on a 30 amp pedestal has 30 amps, on one leg, and no adapter anywhere in the world creates power that is not at the pedestal.

Protection has to match the service

This is the practical consequence that costs people money. A 30 amp EMS monitors one 120 V leg. On a 50 amp service there are two, and the second one feeds half your trailer unmonitored.

So: 30 amp trailer, 30 amp protector. 50 amp trailer, 50 amp protector. The 50 amp versions cost barely more than the 30 amp ones, so there is no economy in getting this wrong. The 50 amp picks.

Which service do you want in a trailer?

If you are choosing a trailer: 50 amp if you want two air conditioners or a residential refrigerator, 30 amp otherwise. The practical cost of 50 amp is that fewer older campgrounds have 50 amp pedestals, so you will adapt down more often than you expect, and a 50 amp trailer managing on 30 amps is more constrained than a 30 amp trailer on 30 amps, because it was designed assuming more.

For most first-time owners with a single-air-conditioner trailer, 30 amp is entirely adequate and simpler.

What to remember

  • Three prongs is 30 amp and one 120 V leg; four prongs is 50 amp and two.
  • 50 amp is roughly three times the power, not 67% more.
  • On 30 amp: air conditioning or the microwave or the water heater, not all three.
  • Adapters change the plug shape and never create power.
  • Protection must match the service — a 30 amp unit sees one leg of a 50 amp supply.

Common questions

Yes, with a 30 A male to 50 A female adapter — but you get 30 amps on one leg, so half the panel. One air conditioner on a mild day, with careful load management.
